“Summer Time and the livin’ is easy”
George Gershwin couldn’t have said it better. Blue skies, blazing sunshine, balmy evenings, and midnight skinny dipping! Barbeques, picnics, long lazy lunches – it’s time for a ‘zippy’ rosé! ‘Zippy’ is a Mitch description for a rosé which is fresh, and fruity, with mouth-watering acidity and extremely gouleyant (French for gulpable!)
My 'hot favourites' for those lazy summer days:
Seignoret les Tours, AOC Bergerac, Rosé 2009
Dark, cherry red colour, with intense red fruit aromas. Off dry, with fresh acidity, full bodied, a seductive mouth-feel, with a great depth of fruit on the palate, and a lingering raspberry finish. Ideal with barbequed meats.
La Pie Colette, Côtes de Duras, Rosé 2009
Believe it or not, a Duras rosé masquerading as a fashionable, sexy Provence rosé! This summer’s hot favourite. Voted 16.5/20 by ‘La Revue du Vin de France’.
La Pie Colette is a play on words – Pie is a Magpie, and Colette is, obviously a name. Picoler in French means to knock it back – i.e. to tipple.
Unusual colour for a Duras rosé - pink salmon with burnished copper reflections.
Elegant and refined aromas of rose petal, and fresh melon. Palate – succulent fresh acidity, light bodied, almost ethereal, reminds me of wild mountain strawberries with a dash of old fashioned fresh country cream.
An organic wine, produced naturally from Cabernet Sauvignon grapes.
Bélouvé, Côtes de Provence, Rosé 2009
Complex aromas of fresh peaches, apricots, quince jelly, and wild rose as it opens up in the glass. The palate has a lovely delicate fruitiness, a creamy mouth feel, and a very long scented, lightly spicy finish.
As we say in France “c’est l’apero”!
